Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights

Fireworks Ban and Current Changes

For the past four years, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that covers the capital as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected local government approached the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, the court agreed to the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to declining air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in India following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the amount of dangerous particles in the environment has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing toxic haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air sets in.

Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple investigations.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand early mortalities each year in the capital.
